TWO TOOLS, THREE STEPS

How to make the Puerto Rican mami dance from a photo

Upload a head-to-knees photo, build the porch still and check your face, then animate the seven moves.

  1. 01

Pick a photo with room for your arms

Use one photo of you from head to knees or full body, face to the camera, no sunglasses, masks or filters. Leave space around the arms: the routine flings them wide twice.

  2. 02

    Build the porch still

Pick Porch at dusk, Two on the plaza or Kitchen still and select Build the still. Image to Image keeps your face and clothes and stands you on the porch at 9:16. If the face is off, rebuild only the still.

  3. 03

    Animate the seven moves

Select Animate it. Image to Video starts on the still with a fixed tripod camera and runs the moves in order, chest to knees. Download the MP4 and add the sound when you post.

THE ROUTINE

The Puerto Rican mami dance steps in order

Hands together at the chest, arms out palms up, hands by the shoulders with a shimmy, arms crossed, side lean with a knee slap, arms wide, hands to the knees.

Arms flung out wide, palms up

Chest, arms out, shimmy

Start with the hands pressed together at the chest, fling the arms out wide with the palms up, then bring the hands up by the shoulders for a shoulder shimmy.

“Beat 1: hands together at the chest, then arms flung out wide with palms up.”

Side lean with a knee lift

Cross, lean, knee slap

Cross the arms in front, then lean to the side, lift one knee and slap it. In the two-person version the friends swap places here.

“Beat 3: a side lean with a knee lift and a slap on the knee.”

Hands down toward the knees

Arms wide and hands to the knees

Open the arms wide one more time, then drop both hands down to the knees and finish grinning at the phone.

“Beat 4: arms wide again, then both hands down to the knees.”

THE TREND

The Puerto Rican mami dance trend explained

A sitcom line became a beat on October 16, 2026, two college friends posted the dance a day later, and AI photo templates followed from October 20.

From Everybody Hates Chris to a beat

The line “Is that what you tell your little Puerto Rican mami?” comes from Everybody Hates Chris, season 2, episode 16 (2007), where Rochelle says it to Julius. It went around TikTok as a sound in early October 2026, and on October 16 producer Baby On The Track put it on a beat; that post had 2.4 million views by October 25.

The OUR DC dance

On October 17 two college friends in North Carolina, @_kenyaad and @brebre, posted the routine they made to the beat. It had 483,700 views by October 25 and spread as a two-person dance; the sound had 8,676 videos that day, almost all from the US. AI photo templates followed from October 20.

Young Miko is a different song

Young Miko has an older song called “Puerto Rican Mami”; it is unrelated to the TikTok sound. Puerto Rico’s traditional dances are bomba and plena. People search for this one as little Puerto Rican mami dance or Puerto Rican mommy dance.

WHEN THE MOVES GO WRONG

Fixing arms and knees in the Puerto Rican mami dance

List the moves in order with one per beat, rebuild the still from head to knees, and keep the clip at 10 seconds.

Arms do random moves

Usual cause: the moves are not in order in the prompt.

Fix: list the seven moves in order, one per beat, as in the motion prompt above.

Knees bend oddly

Usual cause: the legs are cut off in the photo.

Fix: rebuild the still head to knees or full body so the knee lift and slap have legs to work with.

Face drifts

Usual cause: a small face and a long clip.

Fix: make the face larger in the still and keep the clip at 10 seconds.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Puerto Rican mami dance FAQ

Why build a still before the dance?

You check your face, clothes and the room before any credits go to the video. Arms and knees come out cleaner when the still already shows you head to knees with room to move, and a new still costs far less than a new clip.

Where does the line come from?

From a scene of the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, season 2, episode 16, “Everybody Hates Chain Snatching” (aired February 26, 2007), where Rochelle says it to Julius. The clip became a TikTok sound in October 2026; Baby On The Track put it on a beat on October 16.

Is it a traditional Puerto Rican dance?

No. It is a TikTok routine made to the beat in October 2026. Puerto Rico’s traditional dances are bomba and plena, and Young Miko’s older song “Puerto Rican Mami” is unrelated to the TikTok sound.

Where do the sample clips come from?

They are remixes of Seedance 2.0 Fast clips made for this trend on October 26, 2026, re-cut, reframed and color graded for this page. Each card shows the original photo and the still the clip started from. The kitchen card is a still made with GPT Image.

Can a friend join?

Yes. Pick Two on the plaza and add your friend’s photo as the second reference. The still puts you side by side, you on the left and your friend on the right, before you animate; the duo version adds a place swap in the middle.
